After transforming the Villaggio Artigiano Modena Ovest into the "city of trees" for a week last April, the project is back with new initiatives that broaden its scope, while confirming its international reach.

On Saturday 26 July at 4 p.m., in the Palazzo Ducale of Pavullo nel Frignano, the exhibition "Alberi Maestri" will be inaugurated, a photographic exhibition gathering some of the most significant works realised for Alberi Festival: "They might be giants" by Francesco Fantoni, "Ossa sacre" by Chiara Ferrin, "Old growth" by TJ Watt, together with a selection of unpublished images taken from Cesare Leonardi's long research on trees and an evocative multimedia installation that gives new life to the famous drawings of "L'architettura degli alberi" by Leonardi and Franca Stagi. An exhibition itinerary open until 28 September that interweaves photography, video and drawing to restore the complexity and beauty of the world of trees, in a constant dialogue with architecture, the landscape and the cultural memory of the territories.

The exhibition also offers the opportunity to visit the Parco Ducale in Pavullo, one of the elective places of the photographic campaign that Cesare Leonardi, starting in the 1960s, personally conducted in Italy and around Europe to study and learn about trees - with its giant sequoias, inscribed among the monumental trees of Italy, and the famous cedar of Lebanon known to the people of Pavullo as 'Pinone'.
Almost at the same time, on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 July, the city of Carrara welcomes the Modena project as part of C/Art, the Unesco creative city festival dedicated to the relationship between art and territory. Modena, itself a Unesco Creative City for Media Arts, brings to the historic city of marble three emblematic productions of its own path: the installation "L'architettura degli alberi" (The Architecture of Trees), which translates the famous drawings of trees into multimedia form with original music by Corrado Nuccini; the photographic project "They might be giants", dedicated to the monumental trees of the Modena area, which will be projected in large format on the architecture of the historic centre; and finally the project "Alberi Maestri" ("Master Trees") (www.alberi-maestri.org)which opens in Carrara a new stage in the work of mapping the symbolic trees of Italy's creative cities.
The Alberi Festival project was born in Modena from the simple yet radical idea of rethinking the city starting from trees, understood not as decorative elements but as true architecture in the making, capable of redefining the relationship between public space and nature. It has taken shape from the joint work of the Modena City Council Culture Department and the Fondazione Archivio Leonardi, involving all the city's main cultural institutes, inspired by the vision of Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi, who as far back as the 1970s theorised how trees could save cities if mankind learnt to respect their times and spaces. Hence a path that is not only cultural or artistic, but also becomes urbanistic and social: the experience of the Villaggio Artigiano Modena Ovest (Craftsman's Village Modena West), with its pedestrianised streets, potted trees and yellow wooden seats, has triggered a shared reflection on the permanent transformation of those places, marking the start of a green conversion that will lead to the creation, perhaps for the first time in Italy, of tree streets as a concrete response to the climate crisis.
The legacy of that week in April has not stopped. Alberi Festival has already crossed national borders, taking its projects to internationally important contexts. In Paris, last June, the 'Alberi Maestri' project was selected as best practice world within the Annual Meeting of Unesco Creative Cities, as a model to be exported to the more than 350 cities of the global network. From 27 June to 5 July, the exhibition 'Encounter Trees - Modena x Karlsruhe' animated the spaces of the FasanenGarten as part of the German ArchitekturZeit festival. Once again, the focus was on the visionary work of Cesare Leonardi and his interdisciplinary approach between architecture, town planning, photography, design and art, told through original drawings, prototypes, installations and interactive workshops.

"From Modena's neighbourhoods to the European capitals of culture," explains Culture Councillor Andrea Bortolamasi, "Alberi Festival confirms itself as a cultural workshop, participatory and capable of connecting communities, institutions, artists and citizens around a simple and powerful idea: trees will not only save us, but can redesign the way we inhabit the world."

<div
